Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. -- Margaret Mead

IKAN TRANSITIONS TO LEED VERSION 3
December 08, 2009

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) version 3, which was unveiled in late April 2009, has updated checklists for both new construction and existing buildings, allowing owners of old inefficient buildings to go through LEED v3. These new technologies would allow a building as old as the Empire State Building to become LEED Certified.

Some of the many benefits listed by the USGBC on their site for LEED Certified buildings are that:

LEED Certified buildings:

• Lower operating costs and increase asset value.
• Reduce waste sent to landfills.
• Conserve energy and water.
• Are healthier and safer for occupants.
• Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
• Qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives in hundreds of cities.
• Demonstrate an owner's commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

LEED v3 marks a major turning point in the standards that define "green building". This version takes advantage of new technologies and advancements in building science, while its main focus is on energy efficiency and CO2 emissions reductions.

Ikan is professionally trained and certified under LEED version 3, and would be happy to train your team on this new version, or to become consultants on any projects you may have. Please feel free to contact us at design@ikanbegreen.com.
